Goal
The goal of the MSEME program is to prepare highly qualified specialists capable of making appropriate choices to minimize problems related to air pollution, water pollution, etc. The MSEME program was created in 2005 with the support of the government of the Republic of Kazakhstan and a number of international companies and organizations.
The program prepares young professionals for environmental protection work not only in Kazakhstan, but also in other countries of Central Asia.
Objectives:
- To assist the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan in developing educational standards for the Masters program in environmental management
- To create a professional network for implementation of the Master's program in environmental management with a focus on air and water pollution at the Eurasian National University named for Gumilev
- To assist the program in becoming financially self-sustaining
Activities and Results:
- 32 Masters of Science in environmental management and engineering graduated the program with the double degree – from the Eurasian National University and from the University of New Mexico. Of 32 graduates almost 80% were hired by local and international companies operating in environment protection or related spheres. The rest 20% have been hired by local authorities or are undertaking PhD either in ENU or abroad.
- Joint international department of Environmental Management and Engineering was established with support of ENU administration. EME department include bachelor, masters and PhD educational programs.
- Within the project implementation period ENU project team attracted more than 18 guest lecturers - Russian, American and European professors and practicing engineers.
- Four MSEME professors and eight students conducted trainings in Suzak District of South Kazakhstan oblast on ecological education for secondary school teachers and students helping them to be acquainted with the methods of environmental monitoring. This initiative was funded by Joint Venture Inkai – uranium mining company operating in Suzak District of South Kazakhstan oblast.
- MSEME professors developed three teaching modules on environmental monitoring specifically: water and air monitoring.
- The lab satisfying international standards was equipped. The laboratory includes more than 35 equipment items allowing analyzing water, air and soil pollution. Equipment items were purchased by ENU and UNM from European, Japanese and Russian the most well-known vendors such as Perkin Elmer and Shumadzu.
The MSEME program is a joint effort of the Eurasian National University named for L.N. Gumilev, the University of New Mexico and corporate businesses. These partnerships will ensure success of the MSEME program and the development of new innovations in the educational system based on international standards and government and industrial structures’ actual needs.

Global Development Alliance of the U.S. Agency for International
Development (USAID\GDA).
