The violence has been largely inter-ethnic in nature, but political instability and deliberate provocation seem also to have played a part. Up to 2000 people are thought to have died, hundreds of thousands have been displaced, and private and commercial property has been destroyed. The security situation is now improving, and EFCA is planning its post-conflict peacebuilding response. EFCA has been working from its office in the city of Osh (the centre of the violence) for 6 years, with a focus on community-based conflict prevention. Kyrgyzstan also has a relatively active civil society, with numerous small NGOs working on human rights and conflict. There is, however, little direct experience in the country of peacebuilding following violent conflict.
